Countdown to Valentine's Day

I can't honestly say that I'm doing this because I'm tired of the "dating scene," primarily because I don't think I know what the "dating scene" is. I've seen people dating in movies, and I've noticed articles about it in magazines, and it does look like fun; but stuff like that doesn't happen too much in my neighborhood. Maybe I've missed out on the "dating scene" because I have been wrapped up in my career as an academic lecturer and researcher, though by "career" I guess I mean that I work full-time and spend too many hours grading essays. Over the years, I've foolishly depended on the changing tide to determine the women that I've met; it should come as no surprise that I have often ended up with my arms full of driftwood. Friends have suggested that on-line personals might allow me to meet a woman who is more my speed: courageous without being vicious, intelligent without being cold or snobby, who is funny--so very very funny that I laugh hard enough to make my spleen explode. But she is also mature enough to be honest about her needs and feelings, open to new ideas and experiences, and thoughtful about what she wants out of life. I love my job, but I want to meet a woman who will teach me things. I am an excellent cook, but I want my lady to cook for me too. I compose and play music, but I want the mermaid to sing to me sometimes. I am affectionate and romantic, but I want to be surprised by her caress while we wait on line to buy...
