The stars are (or were) an indicator of how many posts you made to the forums, Tara. I think after several hundred, you earned your first star, and then after another plateau was reached, another, until it became a cluster of stars, then a bigger cluster of stars, and so on. If you ever come across a posting by Mingles, he's the only one with the single great big star (which is only fair since he runs the place). Since some changes last year, the posting counters no longer seem to be working so if you don't currently have a star or two, you probably won't be getting any.
