"A team at the University of Copenhagen have tracked down a genetic mutation which took place 6-10,000 years ago and is the cause of the eye color of all blue-eyed humans alive on the planet today.
What is the genetic mutation?
Originally, we all had brown eyes, said Professor Eiberg from the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine. But a genetic mutation affecting the OCA2 gene in our chromosomes resulted in the creation of a switch, which literally turned off the ability to produce brown eyes.
The OCA2 gene codes for the so-called P protein, which is involved in the production of melanin, the pigment that gives color to our hair, eyes and skin. The switch, which is located in the gene adjacent to OCA2 does not, however, turn off the gene entirely, but rather limits its action to reducing the production of melanin in the iris effectively diluting brown eyes to blue. Therefore the switchs effect on OCA2 is very specific.
If the OCA2 gene had been completely destroyed or turned off, human beings would be without melanin in their hair, eyes or skin color a condition known as albinism.
Limited genetic variation
Variation in the color of the eyes from brown to green can all be explained by the amount of melanin in the iris, but blue-eyed individuals only have a small degree of variation in the amount of melanin in their eyes.
From this we can conclude that all blue-eyed individuals are linked to the same ancestor, says Professor Eiberg. They have all inherited the same switch at exactly the same spot in their DNA.
Brown-eyed individuals, by contrast, have considerable individual variation in the area of their DNA that controls melanin production.
Professor Eiberg and his team examined mitochondrial DNA and compared the eye color of blue-eyed individuals in countries as diverse as Jordan, Denmark and Turkey. His findings are the latest in a decade of genetic research, which began in 1996, when Professor Eiberg first implicated the OCA2 gene as being responsible for eye color.
Nature shuffles our genes
The mutation of brown eyes to blue represents neither a positive nor a negative mutation. It is one of several mutations such as hair color, baldness, freckles and beauty spots, which neither increases nor reduces a humans chance of survival. As Professor Eiberg says, It simply shows that nature is constantly shuffling the human genome, creating a genetic cocktail of human chromosomes and trying out different changes as it does so.

Unless of course someone wants to prescribe to the story of Babel this would seem to be correct.

think that's the third or fourth racist comment that you've posted here.
What's up with that?

Last time she made one of these remarks, someone mentioned that we should have introduced her to Bucky101

What do Blonds have to do with Blue eyes? I don't think all blue eyed people are blond, are they? I am but that's not the point.

Genetics is one of the more interesting ones because the science is leading to new discoveries that will definately discover cures and treatments.
It would be better for me to give you some sites then to try to explain because I would just be so redundent however basically its a deletion of melanin.

Every bit of DNA has been passed down and copied. All females carry mitrocondial and the men carry the Y Chromosonal mutations.
"Genetic mutation makes those brown eyes blue"

Bunkie, just about everything that meets the eye is what is called phenotype. Oddly enough , in some of the cloning experiments I saw, with rodents, skin color changes very quickly when a new environment is introduced.
Mitrocondial "Eve" and Chromosoneial "Adam" have been traced back to Africa through genetics. Nat Geo is doing a worldwide DNA testing by taking DNA from everyone who will volunteer and all things lead back to Africa. In Fact, there is a Tribe that is believed to be the remains of early man. Its just a few mutations off.
That accounts, as far as I know for Homosapiens....theres all those other pre-HomoSapiens before.

Actually you couldnt be more wrong.
Adam and Eve.? And the Garden I suppose? Sumpin you learned in a book? Tell me something 36...with all you smarts this should be quite easy....
Did Adam and Eve have a childhood or did god just make them appear as full adults??

I'm told mine look hazel after some hot sex...!

Meli...maybe some lucky male mingler will get to see up close what youre trying to say ....hehe..

Haha Maybe?

Shawn is way to modest about her knowledge. Ill leave it at that.

well scorp, according to many people who know me, including my own family, i am still a Neanderthal.

****Cool info Scorp. Makes you think.*** theres tons of new genetics news coming out as they are decoding that simple double helix thinga ma gingy.
some of it is crepy and some of it is out right amazing. I saw where they have already made bladders by knowing the dna code and using a printer like we have ehre. They use what is called a scaffold to build iton and the DNA is shot out onto it and a circular bladder that is usable and insertable into a human is available. I know, your rolling your eyes.
Tune to NOVA for alot of this stuff or NOVA science now on TV.

BTW, my eyes are brown, so what does that say about me?

Tara

But good news for you. Hand out more ka-ka than you take in, and as you get older, your eyes will turn hazel.
Worked for me!!

a teacher was trying to explain how to her sunday school kids where babies came from, as she went on she explained that babies bake in there mommy's tummy, one of the black school kids popped up and said that his mom musta left him in to long.
i believe thats how the story was told but not to sure but that cracked me up.

If so, then that's certainly true in my case.

Regardless of their occupation/hobbies.
But then, I've always been pretty full of it too.
*Shrugs and smirks*
Tara ;D

The "other Hunter" is full of shit - I on the other hand - have hazel/grey eyes.

It's nice to see that someone has some mannners on here.
