cable TV has a channel for extreme engineering or modern marvels. What has become clear is that other parts of the world are building projects that are not just enormous in scope and size but new architectural desgin also.

The Chinese new olympic Stadium is the first of its kind. The weaved stel that surrounds the inner concrete bowl has nothing to do with structural strength of the seating area.

Its merely the outer facade. But Dayum, its huge and its all stell and Box steel at that, which is very difficult to wolk on as it curves downward. This design is new and it had to be supported thruout its construction phase....or as its called in the trade world Falsework.

Once it was done, the falsework was removed and the Steel sank approx 10 inches into inself. No one was sure it would stand alone but it has.

Then theres the Shanghai towers in China. The Saudis new Islands shaped like a palm tree.

Theres a plan that is being worked on to span the Bearing Straight in the future. Its a huge project and some of the problems have been worked out. Ice bergs are one probelm.

Yup...There are some amazing things being built around the world. As a structural engineer I find it sad that we dont lead in this anymore. I worked on the initial Olympic stadium project in NY...it would have been amazing. Now they have scaled back/canceled most of the projects around here...and the country. If only we had about 500 billion to spend on our own infrastructure...instead of other over seas endeavors...we could rebuild highway system, build a mag-lev train system that could go coast to coast in 6 hours...install offshore rigs to harness the tides/winds for electricity...getting us off war and effectively winning current war with terrorism.

I still have faith in American construction/engineering tho...The other might we were working overnights doing an underwater inspection at The Water Club just south of the heliport on 34th street anf the east river....These piles have been in place since about 1910...and they are still in pristine condition...and when you think of the NYC subway system...even tho everyone complains about it...it is an amzing piece of living engineering....it moves about 3 MILLION people to and from work...that is not a small feat by any means....and 95% of it is the original construction which started circa 1890...(Gloria Vanderbuilt's grandaddy was one of the original builders... ok... I see I digress....no more Starbucks Grande Redeyes for Matt after 9 pm...)

Then I floated out into the river to clear my hose...the sun was just climbing over Long Island city and the east coast of manhattan was colored in this amazing hue..it was like the soft glow at the end of a night around a campfire...and I was like...damn...th men and women who built this city...wow....so yes I am saddened we seem to have tapered off...but we have shone oh so brightly...and I do notthink we will burn out...just look at the Woodrow Wilson Bridge in DC,

http://www.wilsonbridge.com/ or the San Fran- Oakland Bridge

Cool pic there...and Ive talked my self out of being saddened...lol

peace

We should build amazingly efficient environmentally integrated structures. Flamboyant

crap is just more targets for terrorists.

I never was a fan of concrete jungles. It's why I live where I do. smile

I'm a fan of both, and with you on the ennvirnmentally intergrated structres.
