So... what is anyone doing to keep the fat off, take the fat off, or keep from gaining the fat this winter?
My own objective is to be in peak physical shape by the middle of May so I can take the Open Ocean Water Lifeguard Challenge this summer (and win?).
So I am going to try and focus on steady running and weight lifting workouts.
Anyone else have any plans?
Here's the thread for motivation, ideas, and experiences.

Yeah! I did the big pig-out over the Holidays too, I loved it...!

I started running again on Christmas day. I call them ice & snow runs.
Since New Year's Day I've done 7 runs of 4.7 miles or more each time out.
Yesterday and today I ran 5 miles each day. 21-22 degrees, I'm getting used to the cold.

Been belly dancing to get fit. Seriously!
I pigged out so much during the holidays, I gave myself a new middle name: PPppPetunia! LOL
So imagine Petunia Pig doing the belly dance.
It's a riot I tell ya! LOL But I'm still serious about the belly dancing routine.

9F / -12C degrees outside.
Ran 5 miles in the ice & snow, loved every second of it, didn't want to stop.
(Get this... I dressed too warm, lol. I guess that's better than the alternative, huh?)
Man is that ever invigorating, stimulating, and motivating. Yee Haw...!

Good job Rep! and Awesome, verita! I do it too, it's been about 2 years; really tightens the core. And it's fun (and not just for the exercise room)!

I've started back doing Cals and weights.
Someone snatched my bike from the backyard so I need a new bicycle for legs.
I just hooked up with two new Drs in the PAin mangt filed who have helped out of a bad spot. I feel very emotionally reved up to get on with rebuilding what was a finely oiled machine.

4F degrees outside, 5 mile run, beautiful sunny day.
(I guess it was twice as warm last time I ran in 9 degree weather, huh?)
The cold is really NOT a factor at all.

Sunday run of 5 miles, no bare pavement anywhere, all snow, snow, snow, and more snow, lol.

F*cking crazy-ass run... I dressed for 10 degrees, got out there and it was 25 degrees.
Hotter than hell, sweating like a pig, lol, can't stop or the sweat freezes.
Slipping, sliding, flailing every which way.
I'll remember this one for a while!

Sunday January 25th run... 5 miles... 12F degrees.
Amazing how I can layer my clothing to stay all sweaty & warm inside my 'cocoon' while it is soooo f*cking cold on the outside. I turn up the music and go, and it is like I am in another world.

So even though I wasn't going to run today, I ran anyhow.
5 miles... beautiful bright sunny day!!!

Wednesday January 28th (I'm going to remember this one forever, lol!)
5 mile run in total whiteout/blizzard conditions, 23F degrees.

Absolutely amazing run, hardly any traffic, no bare pavement at all, deep snow in many places, much of the time I was laughing so hard I couldn't catch my breath.
Very physically demanding, I never knew how 'easy' it was to run on dry pavement, lol.

Snow adds some effort to it, doesn't it? I bet it was a great workout.
Several years ago I walked 2 1/2 miles uphill in several feet of snow to get my car, and the looks on peoples faces as they drove by was hilarious, there was not another person outside of a vehicle anywhere in site and they thought I was nuts. But I come from northern Michigan, that was a cakewalk in comparison to walking in the woods.
I went for a long walk today, not very cardio but better than sitting around.

(WOW, you are so right - it was a REALLY good workout today, like running in sand, pumping hard getting nowhere... lol.)
Thursday, Jan 19th, 5 miles, 19F degrees... can't feel the cold, it isn't even there.
It is SOOOOO f*cking hard to run in the snow that I was soaked with sweat after the first mile and hot inside my clothing like a furnace throughout the entire run.
NO problem sleeping at night.

Saturday, January 31 - 5 miles, 9F degrees.
Not a difficult run, most of the snow has been plowed flat, too cold to be slippery so footing wasn't an issue. I could do long strides most of the way, even some speed sprints in a few places.
My desire on New Year's Day was to get in a 4.7 miles run every other day or so, weather permitting. Today makes January's 16th run, that equates to every other day, with even more distance than intended. Weather has not been a factor. Mission accomplished.
February here I come....!!!

Kee, I'm jealous- this winter has pretty well leveled me, Even if I go somewhere for a little bit, the cold just knocks me on my butt, lol- I think it's going to take me a couple more years to get used to this, although for the first time..in my entire life..when it was 32 yesterday, I was in shock- it was like a heatwave, or something- when a few years ago, that would have been a Siberian Freeze in California- LOL

*laughing!!* You're getting used to it, if 32 feels like a heatwave!! Soon you'll be sunbathing when it's 40! Honest

At least you can dress for the cold, the heat down here is KILLER, omgosh... but not right now, it's 60 out. The "Floridians" are all shivering, but it feels great to me!!
And to stay on topic, I think I'll go walk a couple of miles. It doesn't even make me sweat, I need a different exercise plan...

Today...? I go running 5 miles in a sweatshirt and a windbreaker, lol

Morning run before work, feels good to know I already accomplished something very important today. Even if nothing else goes right today (which won't be the case) I got my run in.

Thursday, February 5, 2009: 5 mile run, 8F degrees.
Really hard run this morning, not due to the cold, but I just felt like I had to grind it out the whole way. It didn't 'flow' and it wasn't smooth.
I had to dig deep to find whatever it took to finish the whole run and not take a shortcut back home.
Now that it is over I'm glad I didn't cut it short.

Ha! The wind practically stood me up in one spot for an entire 60 seconds then suddenly disappeared and I almost fell face down. Kinda funny. When the wind was behind me I felt like I was flying.
Something different out there every day, never boring.

Saturday, February 14th... Happy Valentine's Day... <3

26F degrees, 5 mile run.
There's a country road I run down, and today it was beautifully 'whitewashed' with snow. The branches from trees on both sides of the road hang over the entire road, and they were all pure white with snow clinging to the branches. The road had a pure white surface today (no cars yet). It was like running into, and through, a white tunnel. Loved it!

Saturday, February 28th.
Did a great workout in the weightroom today, giving the legs and feet a rest.
When I started thinking about winter running outdoors my biggest concern was February because February in northern OH/PA is n-a-s-t-y weather.
Mission accomplished!
I got through February with 15 runs of 5 miles each! Yee haw!!!

I'm still belly dancing, cardio and treadmill/gazelle alternatively. I'm sculpting myself into a new me =) No special diet, I just cut back and ask myself if I really need to eat certain foods. No diet pills because of certain health problems I have already. So, I'm doing this all natural, good old fashion hard work and determination.

I have not posted my fitness activity in a long time however I have never stopped working out. Today I did 1/2 hr core workout and then 1 hr of cardio. I went on 5-6 mile hike with my mom yesterday in one of our beautiful state parks. I saw lots of deer, wild turkeys, geese and goslings..

(Hi FlowerPistol - good job, good to hear from you!)
Beautiful 70F degree sunny day... until 1 mile into my run and it started raining, hard.
I swear my shoes felt like they were 5 pounds each once completely soaked, lol.
Great 5 mile run, totally drenched.

Pictures dont lie. I remember seeing one of myself at my heaviest and that was all the motivation and inspiration I needed! I still keep my old costco card for that reason, it's picture was when I was my heaviest. LOL

Goofy ass head cold is keeping me from running & lifting for a week now, but I think my body can use the rest.
I started a food intake program (fancy phrase for 'diet', lol) about 4 weeks ago where every meal is preceded by 3/4 cup of instant mashed potatoes, then I eat only healthy foods for the actual meal. The mashed potatoes tend to fill me up without adding on a lot of calories. It is working REALLY well in bringing out abdominal development. Doing sit ups & crunches with a 45lb. weight on my chest helps too, lol.
All is well, just enduring a head cold.

Killer workout in the weight room Tuesday.
Doing decline sit ups with 25lb, 35lb, and 45lb weight plates on my chest really cuts up my midsection.
I should be really feeling the workout it soon, it's starting.

Monday & Tuesday I could still feel the 'burn' in my legs from the walking, so running isn't necessary. Feels good.
I'm on a pretty rigid food plan right now, chicken breasts, salmon, vegetables, soy protein drink, fruit, no pasta or bread, minimal fat. I want to hit 169lbs. body weight, then eat a pizza and some donuts (lol).
Tuesday - weight room session (225 * 5 bench @ 173lbs. body weight) I'm gonna keep a log here for myself so I can chart progress of strength vs. body weight.
Hot fun in the summertime.

Monday - weightroom, arm curls.
Tuesday - weightroom, heavy bench.
Before every meal now, I eat oatmeal - low calorie 'fill you up' good for you food. Then I eat either chicken breast, salmon, venison, etc. for protein content. Fruits, vegetables as desired.
The oatmeal before eating seems to be a big key - it keeps me from overeating. I'm down about 9 pounds in just over two months of my 'eating for health' endeavor.
I like it! I feel good! And I'm getting those carved out abdominals that are sooooo hard to keep.
(I do want to eat a big greasy pizza though, lol. But I'm not gonna.

Today I used a metal head 3wood for the first time EVER instead of my wooden head Ping 3wood I got in 1990, lol. I have two sand wedges (regular and 60 degree) I always carry, I got both in 1987.

Leisurely 5-6 miles again today around the noon hour.
These runs are becoming very relaxing, not to mention that my weight is down to 165.5 lbs. (I was at 178+ lbs. on April 20th).
Hopefully I will get in a good workout in the weightroom later. I'm psych'd.

Thursday...
Started my 5 mile run under cloudy skies... 1/2 mile mark it began to rain...
1 mile mark it began to pour... 2 mile mark I am drenched...
My shoes are full of water and they weight 5 pounds each, lol...
3 mile mark no more rain... the sun starts to come out...
4 mile mark it is scorching hot under the sun... the sidewalks are DRY...
I am drenched with rain and sweat now... shoes still water-logged...
After 5+ miles my a@@ is seriously KICKED.
Wow... great run!

Friday late afternoon 5 mile run. Hot & steamy, but with a slight breeze at times.
I had some clients test my patience today (I passed the test
) so the run was good 'head' time.

Hot... hot... steamy... 100% humidity hot.
I was thinking during my 5 mile run today about how I ran in the same places when it was 10F degrees outside. Didn't help, I was still gagging in the heat.

Monday afternoon 5 mile run... 90F degrees, very humid.
Yesterday must have acclimated me to the heat, today's run wasn't hard.

Tuesday evening I ate bread, sugared cookies, and potato salad for the first time since April 20th.
I FLEW through my 5 mile run today, I had to force myself to slow down.

Took a few days off from running, walked about 10 miles on the golf course last Friday.
Ran 5+ miles today, then lifted weights.

Wish I could get back into running. Two bad knees that won;t take the pounding. Used to do up to 10 miles a day before I blew my right knee (one session in the morning another in the evening). I usually stick to the dojo, but haven't been doing much of that lately either.

I guess I'd best get inspired.

switch to running in a pool or swimming, I had to because of knee and hip problems. Getting old sucks.

LOL mysticcy. Back in 1992 I took a spill and shattered my right patella into 15 pieces. The surgeon I had actually pieced it back together rather than picking it all out and discarding it (which most surgeons would have done). I can run short distances without much trouble, and obviously do other athletic things, but running on a hard surface for any distance is out.
In the dojo I've had to modify a lot of my techniques, as anything that puts a heavy torque on my knee will put me on the floor, so instead I work on linear kicks and developing hand speed.
There's still lots of options open to me: I just have to get motivated. But aquatic excercises are certainly something I should look into.

(Yes, swimming is very rigorous exercise and totally non-impact.)
Wednesday 5+ mile run in the hot sun.

Ron running in a pool is very low impact. In summer I use my own pool, there is a harness rig and you more or less run in place. Years and years of running caused problems with a birth defect that was undiagnosed. I was born with no right hip socket, so all the running was grinding it's own socket. Ended up being rather painful.

5+ mile run in the sun, nice breeze blowing most of the time.
Running is getting easier as I drop fat pounds. I believe I'm down probably 16 pounds since I began really limiting my food intake back on April 20th.
Some lady gave me a high compliment - she said I was losing too much weight, lol.

Thats a lot of holes, tck. Even for you.

I limbered up and did some walking the past few days myself. I didn't keep an exact record but I'd say about 15 miles since Thursday, at a good "military" pace of 120 paces a minute, about 3 miles an hour. I'm feeling it today.

Sunday... walked twenty-some more holes, skipped around, played the blue tees, lost count.
Weekends like this are what make people 'rich'... and it ain't got nothing to do with money.

Tuesday heavy bench workout in the gym.
Then a 5+ mile run, took a different route today... for some odd reason I ran through the college campus... can't imagine why (think: tail... in abundance, hotttt).

Been working in 100+ heat for 3 weeks now, no alcohol or trash to eat. Fruit, veggies and chicken. Have lost 15 pounds to 178lbs. Come on winter.

Good work Shopstar, it will pay off in the long run, and I'm sure you feel better already. I've been eating a lot of instant oats, very filling, low fat, easy/fast to prepare, good food.
6 mile run today, third day of running my new route which includes hills.

6 mile afternoon run on the new hill route, I like it.
It is amazing to me how much different it is running now that I have dropped 10% of my body weight (roughly 18 pounds). I am lighter, I feel lighter, I don't have to work as hard to move my poundage around.

Two nights in a row, I got back from work by eight. Coming across Laguna Madre, I challenged a 25yo domestic SPD. ( my term for steroid poppin diver) "last to shore is a co$#sucker" 1 mile from shore. Just dove in. Marathon would have a fit! LOL 1/4 mile and I was good 50 yards in front. 1/2 mile 75 yards. Wasn't even strained. And then the boat was along side to pick him up. He's give me nothing but grief for a month about "take me overseas" and "old man". I'd rather have those Chinese women I worked with in Hangzhau. It's great to be fit at 107yo. Good Martain atmosphere.

Good show Shop! The problem with these "roiders" is that most of them worry about building muscle mass, but do nothing to improve their aerobic capacity. And you just proved it!
I know a guy like that. . . he's incredibly buffed, but he's slow and lacks stamina. I've sparred with him several times. He hits like a train for about 5 minutes then runs out of steam. So all I have to do is keep moving and ducking to outlast him.

Whatever, lol, it is still summer.... isn't it?

Stopped at the 6 mile point, watched a womens' soccer game at the college field, then ran some more. Those chicks have nice legs and tight firm asses.

October 3rd: did a 9.5 mile run, nice weather, good scenery.

Now that the weather is changing I won't be running everyday. I'm going to shoot for some long distance runs, with days off in between.
