According to the Sydney Morning Herald , for the third straight year spectators at the Bathurst 1000 -- a three-day auto race -- will be told to stick to just one case of beer, 24 cans, while at the racetrack. If fans choose to drink light beer, they will be allowed 36 cans per day.
Restrictions also apply to one case of pre-mixed drinks a day or one cask of wine up to four liters.
Police hope the limits will prevent the famous New South Wales race from being marred by alcohol-related violence.
"This is one of the greatest motorsport events in Australia and for some it is a pilgrimage that they make every year," Assistant Police Commissioner Alan Clarke said in a statement. "Police respect people's rights to enjoy the race weekend, but will promptly act when the law is broken."
Australia has seen its share of alcohol-related problems in recent years. Alcohol was blamed as a factor in sparking race-related riots in Sydney in 2005.
