The First Amendment was adopted on December 15, 1791. The Amendment states:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

after watching the docu-???? "shouting fires" on hbo i would say that freedom of speech in the united states no longer exists.

north americans have got a lot of freedom of speech in the US, yeah! and they tend to be proud of that freedom they have fought for.
sometimes you hear them say that they got rid of the British tyranny as well.
that freedom allows them to criticise or post nasty and cruel comments about their president on the Net, and the secret service will not get to their houses, taking their computers...lol

Freedom of speech in the US is limited. For instance, you can say pretty much anything you want. You can't yell fire in a crowded building that isn't on fire. You will likely be put in jail. Same goes for threats. Even to the president. But we are free to voice our opinions and thats a good thing.

If i went on american tv and denied that the holocaust ever existed i would be jailed.
If i was an educator and told my students the reason that the usa was attacked on 9/11 i would probablylose my job for having that view..i could go on...

They are free to speak hear and as an added bonus they are funny, as they don't really know jack. Sure there are problems in the USA, everybody has problems. See pedro, that is where the USA is unique..... We do not hold our leaders to be above our laws or in any way better than us. Our president is not entitled to any more freedoms than we are..... And actually, when you think about it, the President of the USA is treated more like a prisoner with the secret service always restricting his every move, telling him what he can or cannot do for his and his country's security. A prison is a prison whether the bars are made of iron or gold.

Bullwinkle, I used to think that the holocaust was just a bunch of overblown horseshit, but i looked at some numbers and it kinda changed my mind.... during WWII, there were approximately 16 million ethnic Jews. Hitler and the Nazis killed off about 6 million of them...... nearly 1/3 of the ethnic Jewish population. Today, there are less than 15 million living.... If that is not a holocaust, then I wouldn't want to find out what one is, that's for sure.
But spart, if their countries are so great why are they not saying good things about their country instead of hating on the USA. Wouldn't you think they would have something better to do?

My point is that there are some restrictions that are reasonable, such as yelling "fire!" in a crowded theater when there is not one. What you say when on your job is not always protected, because when you are working, you are supposed to be representing your employer. You wouldn't lose your job for simply having that view, though you may lose your job for expressing it while working. That is true, whether you work in a restaurant and have to wear a uniform or in a university where you are expected to adhere to a certain curriculum.
And make no mistake, Freedom of Speech only guarantees that the government cannot take official action against you for simply expressing your opinion. It does not guarantee that there will be absolutely NO consequences for it, however. Keep in mind too, that others have a right to reject your opinion, and if you continue to give it after it has been rejected, it can be harassment, which is not protected by the first amendment. I am not accusing you of harassment, just bringing up points you may or may not have thought of.

Documentaries are like research.... The authors and conductors will always find plenty of evidence that supports their desired conclusions, while (subconsciously or not) culling away evidence that disproves them. A truly objective study or investigation can only exist if its conductor enters it without expecting any specific conclusion. Needless to say, there is not very much chance of that happening these days.
