Rep -

Since it's "bluetooth" I'm assuming you're "wireless" now...

do you have proper wireless equipment from your internet provider?

new computer, even if you were wireless before, you'll need to find out which "ports" need to be opened (sorry, I can't help you "blind" )

get someone on the phone from Dell FIRST and have them help you "set-up" your new "Network Connection" ( "Local Area Connection" )

with the new "Network Connection" (Local Area Connection) set-up and the proper ports open on your router (if it's required) - there shouldn't be any other problems other than.............

Vista.

that's the problem with what's called "level one" tech support - you have to ask specific questions and most the time, you're asking some kid who's just looking up the answer to your question in a book - so again, you have to know the right questions (they are NOT smart, lol)

you still need to at least "create" a new network connection (including TCP/IP settings, etc.... ) ask specifically, if you don't - they won't answer

if they are being extremely difficult (and they CAN be) , you can get the same help (sometimes easier) from your internet provider.

Sorry, Hunter, I can't provide much help either. I switched from computer technical support to database application support a while ago and I can't believe how quickly I forget stuff that I used to do daily. I assume that Dell tech support had you go into the BIOS to check settings there so that can be probably ruled out. Have you checked the website of the cell phone company you're using to see if they have any downloads or patches for bluetooth connections to pc's? The other thing might be what Cristo said, if you're using Vista. I can't connect my USB laserjet printer to my Vista laptop, it says it's not turned on or connected and I've gone to the HP website more than a few times to attempt installation. My workaround is to use it as a network printer available from my workstation. If Vista is your problem, well, supposedly Windows 7 is coming out today (although I've also heard that you'll want Windows 7 pre-installed and wouldn't want to install it yourself).

Biff (and others) - all computers sold with pre-loaded Vista can get a free Windows7 upgrade

(similar to the old Windows98/Free Windows98secondedition upgrade, etc etc etc

I haven't heard anything bad about Windows7.... (so FAR, lol)

what kind of celphone do you have? some cels will only use bluetooth for them annoying little earpieces and nothing else. I have a Virgin Mobile cel that is like that.... they want to make the money you pay emailing your pics to yourself instead of transferring them directly.

Hey Hunter, I have a Dell studio 1737... but from what you're describing, it may not be a problem with the laptop. It might be the phone. Most bluetooth devices have the option to hide themselves from being detected. You're saying that your phone can find the computer, but your computer cannot find the phone. I don't know if tech support already tried this with you, but go through your phone bluetooth settings, and see if there is an option to 'hide, make visible for 30 mins, or always visible' option. Click on make your phone always visible, then try scanning for bluetooth devices again on your pc. Let me know the outcome or if you already tried that.

Good Luck

Sorry bud for delay in my reply.. Work can be a beeyatch... anyway, try this here and see if this works for Vista bluetooth issue. let me know the result

Make sure Windows is configured to accept incoming Bluetooth connections. To do so, if you have Bluetooth wireless technology installed on your computer, you can check Control Panel for Bluetooth enabled devices. Here's how:

Click the Start button , click Control Panel, click Hardware and Sound, and then click Bluetooth Devices.

Click the Options tab, select the Allow Bluetooth devices to connect to this computer check box, and then click OK.

If the device is close to other devices that use radio frequencies (such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, remote controls for electronics or lighting, or 802.11 wireless networks), those devices might be creating interference. Try moving the device that isn't working farther away from the other devices.
