1. Handguns and Personal Protection - wha'chu GOT?
2. Handguns and Personal Protection - wha'chu WANT?
3. Handguns and Personal Protection - wha'chu NEED?
4. Handguns and Personal Protection - WHAT CAN YOU HAVE where you live?
(AGAIN - not a debate forum over "right or wrong" please... thanks)

2) IF I could carry, I'd go for a P35 Browning. Used one plenty while in the military. 13 rounds of 9mm in a package that isn't nearly as bulky as many later 9's.
3) I can't say I actually NEED a gun at all. I could use some more time in the dojo though.
4) Can't carry a firearm up here unless its required by your job (military, police, Brinks guard or the like).

1. My fav is a 1948 Smith&Wesson .38 Special CTG in EXCELLENT condition (what is now the S&W Model 10 Military&Police series) - I also have a small .38 special, a .22 auto (for plinking) and a 9mm for.... well just cuz. I have a few others here and there, but those are my favorites
2. I'm always looking for "GOOD" handguns of any type including what I would consider something worth collecting (no specific types, I just like "looking" lol)
3. What do I 'need?' NOTHING really.... fortunate enough to live in a safe place BUT - there are whackos appearing everywhere and I do have a Missouri CCW license (Conceal/Carry) - and I do like to have one around when I'm traveling (where legal of course)
4. Missouri is VERY VERY "pro-gun" - as long as the weapon is "legal" as defined by very few state laws and even fewer fed laws. ANYONE (who is allowed) can carry loaded handguns ANYWHERE in their vehicle - in plain sight on the seat next to you, laid in your lap, in the glove compartment, under the seat, including all those places at the same time
BUT, MO does require a CCW/Carry and Concealed Weapon permit (which requires 8 hours classroom and some training) to have one "on your person" - heck this place is more "gun-liberal" than any other state I've seen, including Texas, lol)
anyone else? anyone? anyone? anyone? Ferris?

Going to get a Taurus PT 1911 .45 cal
Still undecided on the Ruger Black Hawk or Vaquero.

my .38 "CCW" revolver is the Taurus Ultra-Lite snubby 2" barrel (it's a "glove compartment" carry, lol)
I like Taurus products - I shot a "Judge" the other day - AWESOME handgun!
I've got a Springfield XD 9mm with 5" barrel (the "just because and in case" weapon) but I use my Walther P22 to practice and plink with since 9mm ammo is about 35cents per shot and with three 16 shot magazines in a semi-auto you can easily burn through 30.00 dollars in ammo in a few minutes over at the range, lol!
I use the good CCI Mini-Mags 22LR in the P22 - cheap shooting compared to the rest of them
Rep - ever hear of "MidwayUSA" ?? Great place for anything hunting/shooting/sport related, they sell everything BUT guns - they're about 10 minutes from here. State laws says you can't "go there" and shop, but you can order over the phone or online and just drive over and pick it up and save the shipping charges

Since moving to Canada, I bought the Desert Eagle Pistol with Scope and Sling
The ammunition (size #32 RED rubberbands ) is not always easy to find.
To view this rare and intricate firearm:
http://www.rubberbandguns.com/catalog.htm

but, maybe this site will help -
http://www.buyonlinenow.com/viewProduct.asp?SKU=UNV00132
**IMPORTANT NOTE** - although this ammunition is apparently "canada friendly" and can be shipped north, beware of the Canada's ever present "goods and services tax"

However, I've found that the Desert Eagle "RBG" frequently jams with "Universal" Rubber Band ammunition. Besides, Canadians give me a wide berth when seeing the #32 RED rubberbands loaded in my sidearm. Either that, or they just hear my American accent.
I don't mind paying the "goods and services tax", because that's how I receive my "free health care", don'cha know", eh?

remember - "o before u except after dont and words that rhyme with neighbour and 'eh"
*NOTE: K'bec has it's own grammar and spelling laws... but that's for advanced levels of self-defence situacions not addressed in this forum

Never fired, only dropped once.

I just looked up their gun laws... other than a "waiting period" I don't see any restrictions on "owning" - so....
swamper - what kind of handgun would "NOT" be legal in WI?

I had no idea you were in Canada - well then, you can also add to your collection a Canadian favorite - "the spud gun" and keep it close to a box of spuds in the garage in case of any intruders that walk through the garden etc! I like to keep a good stash of spuds in the garage all winter so they are frozen solid when using the spud gun! Who needs bullets when you can shoot a frozen spud at unknown speeds and then be composted in the Spring! Yes, we Canadians do our part in the whole "green" thing! LOL

You don't want my fellow Americans crossin' the border looking for your weapons of mass destruction, do you?

spud-guns by the chief potato'head only makes sense when you think about it, eh?

But now the cat is out of the bag. Yes, Tim Hortons is taking over in New York City and poutine is fast becoming a favorite fast food there. Soon we'll have Canadian Tire stores sprouting next to Walmarts across the U.S. Then we'll follow up with the return of the Bricklin.
Brilliant plan, no?

Btw Cris, I believe that it's the Desert Eagle "RBG" that has been outlawed in Wisconsin.
The incident leading to the legislation has been caught on tape:

but no seriously, i just got my cwp this year and im yet to get my carry gun but the one im thinking of getting is this
http://www.kimberamerica.com/products/pistols/custom/custom_tle_rl_II/
ive also been considering a crimson trace laser grip for it but i dunno i haven't decided quite yet

Then found a .25 acp PT taurus deluxe pocket pistol and a jennings 22, gave 22 to a buddy for a wedding present and traded the 25 in on a sweet BDL Remington 30-06 in like new shape, but my carry gun is a P90 Ruger 45 auto, also looking into a PT145 millenium pro taurus and also thinking of an XD in 45 auto ,either in compact or other. And want to replace or get back my 44mag.

no safety "button" to mess around with, get confused over, etc but rather the dual external grip safety/trigger safety combo that's activated by simply your palm squeezing firmly on the gun grip and finger squeezing firmly on the trigger at the same time
the other thing I love about the XD is even blind, in the dark - etc, you can "FEEL" if there is a round in the chamber in two places - on the top of the slide and the rear of the slide... which you can easily "see" as well... no guessing, wondering, not having to pull back the slide to check - etc
I also like the ambidextrous features

like christo says it is one sweet trigger pull

ive had a stainless steel S&W 357 mag with pachmeyer grips and a 2" barrel,a tech 9,and thouhg not handguns,an sks with folding stock, hellfire trigger system, and 30 round banana clip,a bullpup 12 gauge assault shot gun that looked cool but that was about it,lol, loved my 16 gauge savage riot shotgun with 20 inch barrel, held 6 shells, pumped it self pretty much,it was so broke in it was smooth, numerous others, sold them when a girlfriend neded money once, lol.
i like more practical firearms now,ive no assault type weapons anymore, just simple hunting rifles,my favourite is my deer rifle,a plain jane marlin model 336 levr action 30-30 ive taken alot of deer with, all under 50 yards.
just bouhgt an old ithaca lever action .22 for 200$,think i got taken, but i like it for a rabbit gun when theyre being pursued by my little hound,i think it may become my favourite.
guess when it comes to handguns,i prefer the simplicity and dependability of revolvers over semi, guess that happens when we get older eh,lol

my tauras ultra-lite .38 snubby fits that role - unloaded, the gun weighs 16.8 ounces (just over a pound)
If I REALLY REALLY wanted true home protection or personal protection in a hand-gun, I'd get the Taurus Judge 45-410 revolver (shoots either .45 long-colt or .410 shotgun shells - or both, lol)

Springfield 1911 Operator .45
Colt 1911 A1 .38 Super
Colt 1911 Defender .45
FN FiveseveN 5.7mm
I carry at least two of the above regularly. I don't make a good victim

Although I carry handguns...I think my most affective personal protection is my Double Barrel Attitude....heh

I got myself the SWEETEST birthday present this week!
(counting this evening, only 2 more shopping days)
I wanted (and found) a stainless steel Ruger GP100 .357 with 4" barrel
I killed 3 fence-posts this afternoon (may they Rest In Peace)

i had no idea buying my first personal defense pistol was going to be so difficult, i seem to be going back and forth like a yo yo between a 45 or 9mm, kimber or smith and wesson, rail or no rail, seriously guys throw me some input please!
if ya need to know wich guns im lookin at let me know here, and ill give you some links thanks guys ttyl

before I went ballistic on them, I could clearly see that two of them was really wired on something and the other one just plain naughty....

ea poe-no offense..but why the heck would anyone hunt with an 8mm mauser? i had 1,it must have been 10ft long, and was heavy, like carrying 2 goats, the barrels were usually all shot out on most of them due to centuries of corrosive ammmo being shot throuhg them,i took a hacksaw to the long straight bolt, put a 90 degree turn on it,bent bolt,so i could mount a scope, and put a sporter stock on it,yeah, they sell hunting loads in 8mm,but they had a terrible sppeed and trajectory, twas glad to be rid of mine,a hunting load in your ak would be a better hunting rifle id think if 1 insist on using old military arms for hunting,but...if you actually try modern hunting rifles,i think it would be hard to go back to old cumbersome military rifles,i wouldnt want to drag 1 around throuhg the woods all day,my 8 mm mauser was only good for dreaming of putting a different caliber barrell on it,and having a custom mauser sporter, theyre actions are great, but just sucks as a hunting rifle in 8mm,with original stock

QUESTION: Many good people in here have been talking about the 38. If you trained and practice with one and you like it! that is great! but I wonder if the 38 round is suitable for home defense??? any comments??

i think im leaning toward the smith and wesson sw1911 45 acp i went to the gun store today and the s&w it more comfortable for my hands and i think it will do everything that i want to do, even though it is kind of big for a carry gun i think i can make it work for me until i can get another pistol which i am sure i will do at some point.
ammo wise i am going to do some type of personal defense ammo for sure ill have to try them all out and see which i like better, but ill probably end up loading my own anyway.
thanks rep

Model, brand, size - etc... are YOU comfortable with the weapon that it will do what you want it to do? That's all that matters.
Taurus makes an AWESOME product and to the best of my knowledge, is the ONLY gun manufacturer to offer a FULL LIFETIME GUARANTEE to fix/repair the gun for free, regardless of what happens to it - PERIOD - and the company nas been around since 1941...

thanks for reading folks

Got an email the other day.....pictured the .45 ACP and stated "Because shooting twice is silly" then pictured a 9mm and stated "9mm, for those who squat to pee" LOL.....got a kick out of it.
Eapoe, the .38 caliber handgun is as good as the person handling, like all weapons. Knockdown power is limited. If it were my choice, I'd go with the .357 which I've owned many and you can load up and down a larger range. I used to shoot in matches where I loaded rounds that would just make the target at 25 yards, lol. No kick with those. Then I've loaded hunting rounds at the upper end of the spectrum that would almost break your wrist when shooting, if you can handle them, they're good!
Cristo makes an excellent point about being comfortable with a gun. I've seen way too many "men" buy large caliber guns because it's cool, but they couldn't handle the weapon. In Alaska, guys were out buying 44 caliber handguns because now they are in the big wilderness with grizzly bears and such. It didn't matter that they rarely shot the gun and were actually afraid of it and couldn't hit a barn let alone a charging bear...LOL. Practice with your weapon of choice, be familiar with it and don't carry anything larger than you can handle. Out of all the guns I've owned I've never bought a .45 caliber because I never found one I could handle efficiently and I've got more shooting experience than the average guy in both competition and hunting situations. I've taken black bear, deer and varmits with handguns.
Sweetest handgun I've ever owned? Ruger .22 caliber with 6" bull barrel. Could hit a gopher in the eye at 40 paces, no recoil and accurate.
Sweetest hunting rifle I've ever owned? Ruger .300 Win Mag. with a mag-na ported barrel, 2x7 Leopold scope, Dall Sheep at 500 yards. The .300 has been a favorite of mine for alot of years due to the same reason the .357 is......wide range of loads for it. Deer to large bear to moose and different rounds for each.
My opinion on best home defense weapon goes to the 12 gauge pump with the 6 to 10 shots. Just the "racking of the slide" is enough to stop a sane person.

God bless all
